How Do Mini-Splits Work?

Ductless mini-split systems operate by using two main components--an indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor compressor/condenser. These units are connected by a conduit, which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and condensate drain. The absence of ductwork is a defining feature of these mini-splits—hence, the name “ductless mini-splits.”

The indoor unit, typically mounted on a wall, contains a fan and evaporator coil. It absorbs heat from the room during the cooling mode, while the refrigerant carries this heat outside to the compressor unit. The outdoor compressor then disperses the heat into the external environment, completing the cooling cycle. Conversely, during the heating mode, the process is reversed, extracting heat from the outside air to warm the indoor space

This system allows for individual temperature control in different zones of a building, as multiple indoor units can be connected to a single outdoor unit. This zoning capability is managed by a remote control or a central thermostat.
